Best Espresso Machines: Match Your Daily Routine

Best Espresso Machines: Match Your Daily Routine

Choose the workflow before the machine: integrated grinding with assisted tamping, or a separate grinder with automatic milk texturing. These solve different parts of making a drink. A feature that simplifies preparing the coffee puck does not necessarily simplify steaming milk, and neither removes cleanup.

This is a manufacturer-document research guide, checked September 5, 2026, not a hands-on review. We have not tasted comparative shots, timed complete drinks, measured temperature stability or tested long-term reliability. Two identifiable models are retained because their official documentation supports a useful workflow comparison—not because they beat every alternative on the market.

Direct comparison: which task gets assistance?

Your decision Barista Express Impress BES876 Bambino Plus BES500
Grinding Integrated conical burr grinder; manufacturer lists 25 settings No integrated grinder; plan a separate grinding workflow
Preparing the puck Dosing feedback and assisted tamping You prepare and tamp the dose
Milk Manual steam wand Automatic or manual texturing; three temperature and three texture settings advertised
Heating-system identity Thermocoil with PID control ThermoJet; Breville advertises a three-second heating stage
Investigate if You want grinding and tamping assistance in one machine You want a separate grinder and assistance with milk texturing
Question the spec sheet does not settle Whether the integrated grinder and workflow suit your beans and routine Whether the complete machine-plus-grinder setup fits your space and budget

These are manufacturer-listed functions, not performance scores. Sources: Breville BES876 specifications and Breville BES500 specifications.

Breville Barista Express Impress BES876: assistance before extraction

Breville documents an integrated grinder and a system that uses the preceding dose and tamp result to adjust the next dose. Milk steaming remains manual. Treat that as puck-preparation assistance, not a fully automatic drink service. The BES876 page identifies a Thermocoil heating system; our previous attribution of the Bambino’s three-second ThermoJet claim to this model was incorrect. Official Express Impress description.

Decision implication: investigate this workflow if operating a separate grinder is an inconvenience you want to avoid. Before buying, ask to see the sequence from beans to a finished milk drink, including emptying the portafilter and cleaning the wand. Decide whether you enjoy that sequence rather than relying on a “beginner” badge.

Unresolved here: grind consistency, shot-to-shot temperature behavior, taste and service life. A count of grind settings does not establish any of those outcomes.

Breville Bambino Plus BES500: a separate grinder, with milk assistance

The BES500 documentation lists automatic milk texturing and a manual option. Breville’s three-second figure describes its heating system, not the elapsed time for grinding, preparing, extracting and cleaning up after an entire drink. Its included-equipment list covers the portafilter accessories and milk jug, not an integrated grinder. Official Bambino Plus specifications and accessories.

Decision implication: compare it when you already have a suitable grinder or deliberately want to choose the grinder separately. Draw the whole setup on your counter plan: machine, grinder, beans, scale if used, and somewhere to handle the spent grounds. A small machine does not automatically make a small complete coffee station.

Unresolved here: the milk texture you will obtain with a particular milk, complete drink time and your preference for the resulting coffee. Automatic settings are options to try, not a promised café result.

Make a complete-setup worksheet

Use current quotes rather than a fixed price in an article. This is a shopping worksheet, not a forecast of savings:

Line item What to record
Exact machine Model code, local electrical version, condition and delivered quote
Grinder, if separate Exact model, included accessories and delivered quote
Preparation space Space for handling grounds, moving the portafilter and setting down a jug
Consumables Manufacturer-specified cleaning supplies and water-filter parts, where applicable
Maintenance Instructions for the actual model; which tasks follow every use and which are periodic
Support Seller identity, local repair route and the warranty that actually applies
Trial or return Whether used equipment is accepted back and who pays return shipping

Synthetic budget example: a hypothetical machine quote of $500, grinder quote of $200 and accessory allowance of $50 make a $750 initial setup, not a $500 setup. Those figures are invented arithmetic, not current prices for either model. Running costs, beans, milk and your time are separate. We do not claim a guaranteed payback period against café purchases.

Check space and local configuration before ordering

A photograph is not a clearance drawing. Check the current instruction manual for the exact regional model and ask the seller to confirm anything unclear: room to refill water, access to the grinder where fitted, steam-wand movement and the space needed to remove the drip tray. Avoid copying a width, depth or height from another regional listing without checking its axis labels.

Both Breville product pages link their relevant instruction manuals and support resources. Use those model-specific instructions for water requirements, cleaning and descaling; this guide does not prescribe a universal chemical or interval. BES876 support links, BES500 support links.

A useful comparison session

Bring the same list of tasks to each demonstration rather than asking whether a machine is “good”:

  1. Identify which actions are automatic and which require your intervention.
  2. Watch one plain espresso and one milk drink being prepared.
  3. Ask what changes when a different bean is used.
  4. Watch the cleanup, not only the pour.
  5. Write down a missing answer instead of assigning a guessed score.

This is a proposed buying exercise; it is not a test FindPicked has performed. If there is no demonstration or usable return option, treat confidence about taste and workflow as lower.

FAQ

Which espresso workflow should a beginner compare first?

Compare integrated grinding and assisted tamping with a separate-grinder setup. The Express Impress assists puck preparation; the Bambino Plus offers automatic milk texturing. Neither eliminates all preparation or cleaning.

Does the Barista Express Impress have the Bambino Plus heating system?

No. Breville identifies the BES876 Express Impress as Thermocoil with PID control and the BES500 Bambino Plus as ThermoJet. The Bambino’s advertised three-second heating claim should not be assigned to the Express Impress.

Does the Bambino Plus include a grinder?

No. Plan a separate source of ground coffee and include a grinder in your budget if you intend to grind beans at home. Compare the total setup, not only the machine price.

Has FindPicked tested these machines?

No. This is a manufacturer-document comparison checked September 5, 2026. It does not establish a taste, reliability, steaming-speed or value winner.
