A practical starting point

Choose a workflow before choosing an AI agent

Describe a repeatable task, compare a simple workflow with an autonomous agent, and test a small example before adopting a larger framework.

3 steps to get startedSources reviewed
Compare a fixed script with an agent before adding autonomy. The directories help investigate approaches; the worked video example below includes real synthetic source/output files and an executed local baseline, not a tested AI-client integration.

Useful starting points

A practical way forward

  1. Define success in observable terms

Write the input, desired output and one check that shows the work is correct. Note which steps are predictable and which require judgment.
  2. Compare the simplest approaches

Consider a template, a script or a fixed sequence before an open-ended agent. Read setup requirements and maintenance notes for any candidate you shortlist.
  3. Run one bounded trial

Test with a copy of a small task, record errors and review every output. Decide whether the result saves enough effort to justify its setup and operating cost.

Worked examples & reusable files

Verified baseline: trim a synthetic video

The source is 12 seconds of an original generated test pattern with a tone. The executed script keeps seconds 3–7 by re-encoding. Both files decoded successfully with FFmpeg 7.1.

Input or setup

Input: 12 s · 320 × 180 · 25 fps · H.264 + AAC
Action: retain seconds 3 through 7 in a new file

Result or expected output

Verified output: 4 s · 320 × 180 · 25 fps
Decoded video frames: 100
Complete-file decode: passed
AI client / directory skill: not tested
  • This is not a lossless stream-copy example or a test of captions, speech, HDR, 4K or variable frame rate.
  • The bundle contains both MP4 files, the executed shell script, a walkthrough and SHA-256 verification metadata. No browser playback or acoustic test was performed.

Decide what the assistant would add

For a fixed trim, the script already solves the task. Treat any agent trial as a separate comparison: can it inspect the source, explain its command and verify the actual result?

Input or setup

Proposed trial, not executed: ask an assistant to retain seconds 3–7 in a new file, explain stream copy versus re-encoding, and check dimensions, duration and frame count.

Result or expected output

Success criteria: no overwritten input; one video and one audio stream; 4-second output; 100 video frames at 25 fps. Report the exit status and measurements instead of only saying done.

Keep in mind

  • Repository popularity is not evidence that a tool fits your workflow.
  • A directory entry is not a hosted automation service or a tested compatibility promise.

Sources, not guesswork
