A practical starting point

Compare text versions or CSV records by key

Compare text line edits or align two CSV snapshots by unique keys. Review added, removed and changed records without treating row order as a change.

4 steps to get startedSources reviewed
Choose a line comparison for drafts and configuration text. For two CSV snapshots, align records by unique key columns instead: the CSV comparison reports additions, removals and field changes even when the records or columns are reordered.

A practical way forward

  1. Choose the correct baseline

Place the earlier version on the left and the revised version on the right. Keep both originals so the comparison is reversible.
  2. Inspect changes in context

Read the lines above and below each difference. A moved paragraph or inserted line can make a simple line-by-line comparison look larger than the actual edit.
  3. Check formatting separately

If spaces or line endings create noise, normalize a working copy and compare again. Keep meaningful indentation intact in code or structured text.
  4. Compare CSV records by identity, not line position

For CSV snapshots, paste the earlier export as Before and the later export as After. Use the same header names on both sides, select unique non-empty key columns and choose which remaining fields to compare. Review added, removed, changed and unchanged records; do not silently pair duplicate keys.

Keep in mind

  • The text tool compares line positions, not semantic edits. The CSV tool compares exact string values by selected keys, not word-level history or fuzzy identity.
  • A highlighted change is not automatically an error.
  • CSV comparison requires the same unique header names on both sides; column order may differ. Blank or duplicate keys must be resolved deliberately before matching. Selecting fewer comparison columns excludes other changes from the changed count.
