A practical starting point
Test a pattern against real examples
Check a regular expression against matching and non-matching examples, choose the right flags, and verify the pattern in its destination engine.

A practical way forward
Write examples first
Create a few strings that should match and a few that should not. Include an empty value, punctuation and a boundary case relevant to your task.Choose flags deliberately
Test case sensitivity and multiline behavior separately. Use anchors when you mean an entire value rather than a matching substring.Repeat in your actual runtime
Copy the tested expression into the destination application and rerun the examples there. Syntax and Unicode behavior can differ between engines.
Keep in mind
- The browser uses its own regex engine; server-side engines may differ.
- Start with short samples because complex patterns can make a browser unresponsive.
